DIY Natural Deodorant

I made the switch to a natural, aluminum-free deodorant years ago after learning the association between aluminum and Alzheimer's disease, but I've never been completely satisfied. Some just didn't keep up with my activity level and others left my skin red, irritated and peeling. I've quite literally tried them all. So for the longest time, I settled for an unscented traditional deodorant. Until recently, when I decided it was finally to make my own using essential oils.

The end product is a highly effective, odor-reducing, all-natural, non-Alzheimer's causing product that both my husband and I use daily. It can even keep up with an entire days worth of activity, including a long workout!

Here is what you will need:

Place about 1 inch of water into a small sauce pan and bring to a simmer. Place shea butter and coconut oil into the glass container, and place the container in the simmering water. Stir until melted, then remove the glass jar from the water. Add in baking soda and arrowroot powder, 1T at a time and stir continuously until all clumps are removed. Add in vitamin E oil and essential oils. Place your deodorant in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight to solidify. Upon removing, let stand at room temperature until it is no longer cold, then stir with a fork. Use daily -- a little does the trick!

You can also use an empty deodorant container instead of a glass jar for storage, if you prefer. Just clean your old container and pour the deodorant into it as a liquid, You won't be able to stir it after it hardens, so the result will be less fluffy and smooth, but effective nonetheless!

Other oils that would be great for this would be lavender + melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree), purification, joy, geranium, lavender + melrose, gentle baby, lavender + cedarwood or any combination you like!

I am so happy to finally have a product that is safe and effective! And if you're worried about convincing the man in your life to make the switch, let him know that my elk-hunting, gun-toting, Crossfitting, manly man of a husband uses this blend daily!
